Saying Yes More

I’m Trying To Say “Yes” More

“Can you wake me up with hot cocoa in the morning?” He asked.

“Yes,” I said, because I want to say “yes” more.

I want “yes” to be my default answer. That doesn’t mean I say yes to everything - just that I think first about how I might say it.

After many years of being a person who defaults to “no,” it is not easy.

Sometimes it’s a flat out “yes, definitely", and sometimes it’s sort of yes-adjacent.

But I’ve discovered I can usually say some version of yes. And I’ve also discovered some of my favorite moments are at the other end of those yeses, which only makes me want to say “yes” even more.

”And can it have a LOT of little marshmallows in it?” He added.

”Yes, definitely,” I answered, because I want to say “yes” more

So this morning I woke my ten year old up with a Christmas cup full of hot cocoa, topped with a giant handful of mini marshmallows.

I brought one for myself too.

And we spent a half hour together, sipping our cocoa and laughing at Phineus and Ferb, because I’m saying “yes” more.

At one point, his hand (still small, but not for much longer) found mine and I had one of those wish-I-could-freeze-this moments.

I took a sip of my own cocoa, and settled into that moment of content. I’m grateful for so many things, but this morning I was especially grateful for saying “yes” more.
