Jhina “Mahsa” Amini
On September 13th, Jhina Amini (who went by Mahsa because her Kurdish name “Jhina” is not allowed by the Iranian government) was arrested in Tehran by the morality police.
Her hijab was not worn correctly. Essentially this 22 year old was arrested because some of her hair was showing. She died in custody shortly after. It isn’t immediately clear what her cause of death was, but the fact that she died in custody after being arrested for having some hair showing sparked a wave of protests across Iran.
Her Name Was Jhina

Oppression is not Protection
The morality laws about how women must dress are purportedly to protect women. Oppressive laws and restrictions often have a stated purpose of protection. But oppression is not protection. We should not have to oppress in order to protect groups of people.
