Have you ever heard of Emmy Noether? She was a German mathematician who studied chain conditions on ideals of rings (I wish I knew what that meant, but, alas, I do not.)
“In the judgment of the most competent living mathematicians, Fraulein Noether was the most significant mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began.”
- Albert Einstein on Emmy Noether
Emmy could not attend the University of Erlangen because women were not allowed at the time, but she was able to audit classes, which she did. She also audited classes at the University of Gottingen. In 1904, when women were allowed to take classes, she began to and received her Phd in Mathematics from the University of Erlangen in 1907.
Emmy was invited by some of the professors she audited at Gottingen to return to Gottingen to lecture. This caused quite a controversy among the staff - many of whom could not fathom a woman professor.
“The faculty is not a pool changing room.”
- David Hilbert on the controversy, annoyed that his colleagues cared so much about the sex of Emmy
She was allowed to lecture under the name of another professor, until 1919 when she was formally admitted as an academic lecturer.
“My [algebraic] methods are really methods of working and thinking; this is why they have crept in everywhere anonymously.”
- Emmy Noether
