Wisconsin’s name might have come from a Native American word meskonsing, meaning roughly “it lies red,” or "this stream meanders through something red." It probably refers to the state’s reddish sandstone.

Though badgers live throughout Wisconsin, the animal isn’t the reason for the nickname the Badger State. “Badger” was a nickname for the 19th-century miners who cut into Wisconsin’s hills to find lead then slept in their caves—just the way badgers burrow to create dens. Besides badgers, many mammals such as black bears, moose, white-tailed deer, muskrats, porcupines, and flying squirrels roam the state. Downy woodpeckers, eastern bluebirds, purple finches, red-winged blackbirds, and robins (the state bird) are some common fliers.

Wisconsin’s reptiles include milk snakes, named so because they often live near barns (even though they don’t drink milk!), snapping turtles, and common five-lined skinks. Eastern red-backed salamanders, American bullfrogs, and mink frogs are among the state’s amphibians. READ MORE ABOUT WISCONSIN HERE

Experts aren’t sure where Wyoming’s name originated. The name might come from a Delaware Indian word meaning “mountains and valleys alternating,” or “large plains.” It might also come from the Munsee language, meaning “at the big river flat,” or the Algonquin language meaning, “a large prairie place.”

It’s nicknamed the Equality State because it was the first state to grant women the right to vote and to have women serve on juries and hold public office. READ MORE ABOUT WYOMING HERE

West Virginia was originally going to be called "Kanawha," a name that honors a Native American tribe. However, even though the region separated from Virginia, officials still wanted that as part of its new name. (Virginia was named after a nickname of Queen Elizabeth I, who ruled in the late 1500s.)

West Virginia is called the Mountain State because it’s the only state completely within the Appalachian Mountain region, and its average elevation is higher than any other state east of the Mississippi River! READ MORE ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia

TSome people say West Virginia is the northern most southern state, others say it's the southern most northern state. Harpers Ferry changed hands a dozen times during the Civil War. The New River is one of the few rivers in the world that flows south to north. At 1,815 feet long, the New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel-arch bridge in the United States. West Virginia split from Virginia during the Civil War. West Virginia wanted to stay in the Union, while Virginia wanted to become part of the Confederacy. Much of West Virginia is mountains, hence the name the Mountain State. Much of the state, 75%, is also covered in forest. When the state split from Virginia, delegates voted on a new name from Kanawha, Allegheny, and West Virginia. READ MORE ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA
