Missouri is home to the biggest mammal in North America, the American bison. Black bears, bobcats, mountain lions, and endangered gray wolves also live in the state. Peregrine falcons, eastern screech-owls, and purple finches are some of the birdsthat fly through Missouri. The state’s reptiles include alligator snapping turtles, Great Plains rat snakes, and prairie massasaugas (a type of rattlesnake). Did you know that between December 16, 1811, and late April 1812, over two-thousand earthquakes tremors occurred on the Mississippi River valley? During this period, three of the strongest earthquakes (between 7.5 and 8.8 on today’s Richter Scale) in U.S. history hit Missouri near New Madrid. Ice cream cones made from waffles were first invented in Missouri in the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904 when an ice cream vendor ran out of cups to supply the ice cream. The U.S. gained Missouri from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and the territory was admitted as a state following the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Throughout the pre??Civil War period and during the war, Missourians were sharply divided in their opinions about slavery and in their allegiances, supplying both Union and Confederate forces with troops. The ice cream cone became the state of Missouri's official dessert on August 28, 2008. The 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis was the birthplace of the treat and has become a staple at many community events across the state, such as the State Fair. The University of Missouri-Columbia has played a large role in the development of ice cream products for over a century. Missouri presently ranks tenth in ice cream production. Three of North America's biomes converge in Minnesota: prairie grasslands in the southwestern and western parts of the state, the Big Woods deciduous forest of the southeast, and the northern boreal forest. The northern coniferous forests are a vast wilderness of pine and spruce trees mixed with patchy stands of birch and poplar. Much of Minnesota's northern forest has been logged, leaving only a few patches of old growth forest today in areas such as in the Chippewa National Forest and the Superior National Forest where the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has some 400,000 acres (1,600 km2) of unlogged land. St. Paul was originally going to be called Pig's Eye, after the first settler who was blind in one eye. People called him Pierre 'Pig's Eye' Parrant, who settled in the territory we now know as Saint Paul!

The state of Minnesota was named after the Dakota Indian name for the Minnesota River, "Minisota" which means sky-tinted water.

Minnesota is known for our 10,000 lakes, when actually we have 11,842 lakes in all!

A FEW BITS OF MICHIGAN HISTORY! READ MORE ABOUT MICHIGAN HERE

1837: Michigan is admitted to the Union as the 26th state.

1842: Copper mining operations begin near Keweenaw Point.

1844: Iron ore is discovered in the Upper Peninsula at Negaunee.

1846:  The state of Michigan abolished capital punishment for all murders and other common crimes.

1847: With the passage of Public Act 60, the state capitol is relocated to Lansing Township, presently Lansing.

1855: The ship canal at Sault Ste. Marie opens.

1861-1865: More than 90,000 Michigan men are mustered into service during the Civil War.

1879: The new Capitol is dedicated in Lansing; the structure cost $1,510,130.

1908: Ford begins manufacturing the Model T.

People have lived in the land now called Michigan for at least 12,000 years. Many centuries after those first inhabitants arrived, Native American tribes lived on the land, including the Kickapoo, Miami, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Menominee, and Fox and Sauk. Michigan is known for fishing, thanks to its 3,288-mile coastline, the longest freshwater coastline in the United States. Forestry is another important industry, as 90 percent of the Upper Peninsula is covered in trees. Michigan is the only place in the world with a floating post office.  The J.W. Westcott II is the only boat in the world that delivers mail to ships while they are still underway. They have been operating for 125 years.

More tonnage passes though the historic Soo Locks in Sault Ste.  Marie than the Suez and Panama Canals combined.
