Iowa is home to the ice cream capital of the world

Le Mars, Iowa, has a rich history of civility and culture, once being noted in the 19th century as one of the most well-known cities in the United States, and today it still claims rank as the “Ice Cream Capital of the World.” This accolade is much in thanks to Wells Enterprise Inc., which creates the most ice cream novelties in the world, and operates the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor right in their hometown.

Thanks to the University of Iowa and the surrounding community, including the best Writer’s Workshop in the nation, Iowa City is the only UNESCO City of Literature in the United States. This prestigious title solidifies Iowa City as one of the most resourceful and rewarding places to dive into the world of literature in the nation, and just through the staggering amount of authors and works that have come through this college town, it is easy to see why Iowa City has received this designation. Archaeologists aren’t sure exactly when the first people arrived in what’s now Illinois. But archaeologists have uncovered ancient spear points and tools suggesting that humans lived here at least 10,000 years ago. Illinois’ first-known Native American tribes, which include the Miami and the Illiniwek (also known as the Illinois), lived on the land thousands of years later.

The first Europeans to reach the area were French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet, who arrived in 1673. In 1717 Illinois became part of the Louisiana territory, a French colony. But in 1763 at the end of the French and Indian War, the French ceded, or gave up, the region to Britain. After the American Revolution, Illinois became a U.S. territory, and in 1818 it was declared the 21st state.

During the Civil War (1861-1865) Illinois hosted no major battles, but more than 250,000 troops from Illinois fought for the Union.

Disaster struck in 1871 when a huge fire swept through Chicago, Illinois. But the reconstruction that followed the Great Chicago Fire made Chicago into a modern city that contained the world’s first skyscrapers. READ MORE ILLINOIS FACTS FROM NAT GEO

Much of Illinois’s land is flat, with irregular plains in the western, northern, and southern sections. This area once constituted a vast tallgrass prairie, virtually all of which was converted to farmland or urban sprawl. The unglaciated southernmost part of the state is in many ways out of character with the rest of Illinois. Shawnee National Forest, the only large tract of federally administered land in Illinois, covers a great part of this region. Southern Illinois consists of gently sloping, open hills. Rolling hills in the northwestern corner include the state’s highest point, Charles Mound, which is 1,235 feet (376 metres) above sea level. The statewide average elevation is about 600 feet (180 metres). READ MORE ABOUT ILLINOIS HERE
