No one’s sure how Tennessee got its name, but two Native American villages were called Tanasi and Tanasqui, which sound similar to “Tennessee.”

The state got its nickname from some impressive volunteer work. During the War of 1812, an estimated 20,000 troops volunteered to fight, and in 1846, 30,000 Tennesseans enlisted for the Mexican-American War. READ MORE ABOUT TENNESSEE

The 1996 Olympic white water events were held at Ocoee River in Tennessee. The name Tennessee comes from the Native American words Tanasi or Tansqui. It is called the Volunteer State because when soldiers were needed in the War of 1812, Tennessee soldiers volunteered and helped to defeat the British at the Battle of Orleans. The two states with the most state borders are Tennessee and Missouri, which is one of the eight states Tennessee touches. The other seven are Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama. 

In 1807, Kingston was named the state capital for one day. That's because the general assembly met there in in order to fulfill a treaty obligation made with the Cherokee, according to the state encyclopedia. READ MORE ABOUT TENNESSEE

Dakota is a Native American Sioux word that means roughly “friendly” or “allies.”

The state’s nickname comes from Mount Rushmore, an enormous sculpture of the faces of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt carved into the Black Hills. The presidents’ faces are roughly 60 feet tall! READ MORE ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA HERE

Harney Peak is the highest US mountain east of the Rockies. The Crazy Horse Memorial being carved near Mt. Rushmore will be 641 feet wide and 563 feet high. The movie Dances With Wolves was filmed in South Dakota. The Homestake Mine is one of the deepest mines in the world at 8000 feet deep! Mount Rushmore has faces of four famous US presidents carved into it. They are Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. The Carolinas were named after King Charles I of England.

The state tree of South Carolina, the Palmetto Tree, was used to build the walls for a fort on Sullivan Island. The rubbery trees were a great defense as cannon balls bounced right off them! The first shots of the Civil War were in South Carolina at Fort Sumter. Johnston, South Carolina is called the Peach Capital of the World. There is a giant water tower in the shape of a peach near Gaffney. Before South Carolina adopted the Palmetto State as its nickname, it was called the Iodine State. The official state dance is the Shag.

Wild pigs, bobcats, gray foxes, and river otters are some of the mammals that live here. Several of the state’s avian species are named after the Carolinas, including the Carolina chickadee and Carolina wren. South Carolina is home to reptiles such as American alligators, corn snakes, and gopher tortoises. The state can be divided into three geographic areas. From east to west: the Atlantic coastal plain, the Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Locally, the coastal plain is referred to as the Low Country, and the other two regions as Up Country. The Atlantic Coastal Plain makes up two thirds of the state. Its eastern border is the Sea Islands, a chain of tidal and barrier islands.
