Forestry is another important industry, as 90 percent of the Upper Peninsula is covered in trees. The state also produces iron oxide pigments, which are used for making red, orange, yellow, and black pigment—often for makeup. READ MORE HERE

More tonnage passes though the historic Soo Locks in Sault Ste.  Marie than the Suez and Panama Canals combined.

Early colonial settlers named the American Robin for its resemblance to the familiar but unrelated European Robin, which is smaller but also sports an orange breast and upright posture. Today, the American Robin exists in the form of seven subspecies, subtly differentiated by their body size and plumage, with the exception of one subspecies in southern Baja California, which sports pale gray-brown underparts in lieu of rusty tones. Excavations in Massachusetts reveal that the earliest human inhabitants arrived about 3,000 years ago. European explorers began roving the coast as early as the 11th century. In 1497 and 1498, John Cabot carried through the explorations upon which England based its original claim to North America. In 1620, the Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, made a brief stop in what later became Provincetown before settling in Plymouth on land belonging to Wampanoag Chief Massasoit. Massasoit ratified the first New England treaty between Europeans and Native Americans in December of 1620.

In 1629, a royal charter was granted to the Massachusetts Bay Company to promote the settlement of the territory and to govern the colonies. Various forms of increasingly repressive British rule culminated in the first battle of the American Revolution on April 19, 1775, at Lexington and Concord. READ MORE ABOUT MASSACHUSETTS

Massachusetts has been the scene of many historical events. In 1639 America’s first post office opened in Boston. In 1692 and 1693, untrue rumors led to witch hunts in Salem, Massachusetts. And in 1876 Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated the first telephone.

But Massachusetts may be most historically significant for the role its people played in the Revolutionary War.  READ MORE ABOUT MASSACHUSETTS HERE

“On March 10, 1876, it was here in Boston that the first telephone call was madewhen Alexander Graham Bell summoned his lab assistant, Thomas A. Watson. On the phone, he said, “Mr. Watson—come here—I want to see you.” Watson was in the next room where he heard the message from the receiver. In a letter to his father, he wrote: “The day is coming when telegraph wires will be laid on to houses just like water or gas — and friends will converse with each other without leaving home.” READ MORE ABOUT FAMOUS THINGS IN MASSACHUSETTS
