Georgia was named after King George II, who approved the colony’s charter in 1732.

Wonder how Georgia got its nickname? Cherokee Indians grew peaches in Georgia in the mid-1700s, and today the state produces about 2.6 million bushels a year, making it the third biggest producer of peaches in the United States

Black bears, bobcats, deer, and gophers are common in Georgia, and off the coast you can spot manatees, right whales, and humpback whales. Georgia is also home to bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and woodpeckers.

With over half the state covered in pine trees and more commercial forestland than any other state, it’s no wonder Georgia is known for its lumber, resins, and turpentine, which all come from trees.

Male yellowhammers are unmistakeable with a bright yellow head and underparts, brown back streaked with black, and chestnut rump. In flight it shows white outer tail feathers. They are often seen perched on top of a hedge or bush, singing.

The yellowhammer, also known as the northern flicker or yellow-shafted flicker, became the official state bird of Alabama in 1927. Soldiers from Alabama were nicknamed “yellowhammers” in the Civil War due to their grey-and-yellow uniforms, which matched the colors of the bird. Alaska, known as the "Last Frontier," is the largest state in the United States, spanning over 663,000 square miles. It is also home to Denali, the highest peak in North America, towering at 20,310 feet. With more than 3 million lakes and over 100,000 glaciers, Alaska boasts breathtaking natural beauty and is a haven for wildlife, including bears, moose, and eagles. The state also experiences extreme weather conditions, with temperatures plunging to -80°F in certain regions during winter. Additionally, Alaska is rich in natural resources, with vast oil reserves contributing significantly to its economy.

—Alaska is called the Land of the Midnight Sun because for over two months in the summer, in the northernmost part of the state, the sun doesn’t set at all!
